The Nature Center invites you to our annual celebration of the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. Bring your own lantern or borrow one of ours (while supplies last). Dress for being outdoors, and follow the lantern-lit path along the Rodak Trail to the big bonfire anytime between 6 and 8pm. See details about parking & shuttle under "About this event".
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
5:45PM: We’ll have milk carton lanterns ready inside for you to borrow. We encourage you to bring your own, because quantities may run out. Here’s how you can make your own lantern easily (link here to instructions). We’ll have tea lights and branches (to carry your lanterns on) outside in back of the building. Please have an adult or Nature Center staff light your candles. Please note, that the only restrooms open are inside the Nature Center.
Proceed down the candle-lit Rodak Nature Trail any time after 6pm at your own pace. You may wish to bring headlights or flashlights, but please use them sparingly. We would like to maintain the evening’s ambience.
Bonfire and Swedish Candles below the education yurt. We’ll have smores and hot chocolate until we run out. Please keep an eye on your little ones. The bonfire will be quite large.
The educational yurt will be open as a warm up shelter. The only restrooms are inside the Nature Center, which will be open throughout the evening.
The Beaver Viewing Deck will be candlelit and a perfect place for a photo op. Don’t forget to bring your cameras. We’re hoping to have a beautiful ice sculpture as a backdrop.
7pm-7:30pm: Fire jugglers will perform on the Beaver Viewing Deck. Spectators will need to move back to designated area to watch the performance. This is a Fire Marshal requirement for your safety. Please watch the little ones.
8:15pm: Please return to the Nature Center for the last shuttles back to the North Fork parking area. One driver can return to the Nature Center to pick up other family members if everyone cannot make it back in time. This will also free up any shuttle congestion at the end of the evening.
Need assistance? Ask a volunteer! We’ll have volunteers inside the Nature Center and Education Yurt all evening and at the hot chocolate/s’mores area.
There will also be volunteers in near both end of the shuttle service.
Parking is limited. Please do not park on Eagle River Road at the NO PARKING signs.
2 shuttles will be operating between the North Fork parking lot (Mile 7.5 Eagle River Road) and the Nature Center throughout the evening starting at 5:30pm,
every 15 minutes. The last shuttle to leave the Nature Center to North Fork – 8:30pm (the Nature Center building will close at 8pm).
We ask that you park at the North Fork and use the shuttles because parking will be scarce. The Division of Transportation does not want people to park along Eagle River Road. Those who do park in areas that say “NO PARKING” may get towed. You can also drop off your family members at the Nature Center and return to the North Fork to park, so that only 1 person in your party needs to take the shuttle.
