Waves & Waterlilies: Understanding Art through Ekphrasis
Program Type: All Ages
This slide show and lecture is for nature lovers, art lovers, and lovers of words. Local poet Mar Ka (author of Be-hooved, University of Alaska Press,
2019) will focus on art that takes nature as its subject, and on ekphrastic poems that have been written in response. Ekphrasis refers to the process
of describing art through the medium of another art. As art critic Roberta Smith states: “Art accumulates meaning through an extended collaborative
act . . . You put into words something that everyone has seen. That click from language back into the memory bank of experience is so exquisite.
It is like having your vision sparked.” Mar Ka invites you to come have your vision sparked!
