Give from Your IRA and Support the Eagle River Nature Center

If you’re 70½ or older and take annual withdrawals from your IRA, you can use a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) to make a tax-smart gift to the Eagle River Nature Center.

A QCD lets you donate directly from your IRA to the Nature Center without adding to your taxable income—and your gift can count toward your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) for the year.

Here’s what to know:

• The gift must come directly from your IRA (not a 401(k) or 403(b)).
• You can give up to $100,000 per year (or $200,000 for couples).
• Your gift must go directly to the Nature Center—no goods or services in return.

Please talk with your financial or tax advisor to see how this option might work for you. And remember to contact your IRA administrator early if you’d like your gift to count this year.  Some institutions set their own deadlines for processing charitable transfers.

You can support the Eagle River Nature Center through a donor-advised fund (DAF): a simple, flexible, and tax-efficient way to give to the organizations you care about most.

What Is a Donor-Advised Fund?

A donor-advised fund (DAF) is like a charitable investment account created for the purpose of supporting nonprofits. Individuals contribute cash, stocks, or other assets to their fund and receive an immediate tax deduction. Over time, those funds can grow tax-free and be directed to qualified charitable organizations such as the Eagle River Nature Center.

How It Works

• Establish your fund with a community foundation, financial institution, or other sponsoring organization by making a tax-deductible contribution (cash, stock, or other assets).
• Your contribution grows tax-free under the management of your sponsoring organization.
• You recommend donations from your fund to qualified 501(c)(3) charities—such as the Eagle River Nature Center.
• The sponsoring organization approves and distributes your recommended gift directly to support the programs and places you love.

Give a Gift of Stock

If you hold stock in your investment portfolio, donating those shares can be a meaningful way to support the Eagle River Nature Center. Gifts of appreciated stock held for more than 12 months may provide significant tax advantages: you may be able to avoid capital-gains tax on the appreciation and still receive a charitable deduction for the fair-market value of the stock on the date of transfer.

How to Notify Us

Because brokerage firms and financial institutions do not always provide donor details automatically, we kindly ask you to notify us in advance.

Here are a few examples:

• United Way:  Do you make a donation to your company’s UNITED WAYS WORKPLACE CAMPAIGN? Do you also make a contribution to the Nature Center? You could increase the total amount you give to charity, by designating the Nature Center as the recipient of a portion of your United Way contribution. Many companies will then match (or 50% of your total contribution) the total amount of your donation. This amount will go into the United Way general fund. The Nature Center receives your donation and your overall contribution to charity is increased. For more information, contact United Way or the Nature Center.
• State of Alaska Share Campaign:  Each fall the SHARE campaign runs for several weeks giving State of Alaska Employees the opportunity to donate to their chosen Alaskan-based nonprofit directly through payroll deduction.

Pick.Click.Give. is Alaska’s unique way for residents to support the causes they care about by donating a portion of their Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD). You can help sustain the Eagle River Nature Center and our programs by participating!

When applying for your PFD online, you can choose to Pick.Click.Give. in increments of $25, up to the full amount of your PFD for that year. PFD applications are available January 1 through March 31, and Alaskans can adjust or add to their Pick.Click.Give. pledges online through August 31.

Your support through Pick.Click.Give. helps maintain trails, run educational programs, and preserve Alaska’s wild spaces for everyone to enjoy.
